As part of an information, guidance and design system for the fortresses, castles and antiquities in Rhineland-Palatinate I created 3D models of the castles, e.g. Stolzenfels, Sooneck or Pfalzgrafenstein, showing the historical sites with the surrounding environment, in collaboration with the Berlin based design company adlerschmidt.
On the basis of historical drawings, engravings, plans and own research with measuring and photographs, the major challenge was to develop a design style for the buildings with its historical important characteristics (e.g. towers, roofs, pinnacles, wall sizes) as well as for the environment (the combination of roads, villages an landscape) on different scales.
In a second step, the computer generated models were converted to be processed in concrete and bronze (dimensions 60 x 60 x 70 cm). These stones were set up near the historical sites, to work as stones of orientation, showing the properties, roads, villages, the landscape and service information. The sites get tactually comprehensible, including braille information.
In addition, the computer generated models are used for detailed maps, animation movies or multimedia guidance such as palms.
The entire project, including signage, printed matters and the models received compliment from the Design Award Rheinland-Pfalz 2006 and was nomniee for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany, 2008.
My roles: 3D modeling, animation, art direction, production.
