Those who dismiss football as just a sport, with some running down below and others roaring up above, disregard the essentials. The fans by no means only celebrate their teams, but also themselves, especially at World Cups and Euros. Since 2006 I have been searching for the fans in stadiums and training camps, on campgrounds and fan miles, who make themselves a star and football their stage. I always experience my best moments where the ball comes to a standstill: on the fringes of these mass events.
